West set for Cup Semi Double

Last season saw The West Men lift the 2018-19 National Championship as the winners of BUCS 3A took down Strathclyde, winners of BUCS 2A. A thrilling game saw former West star Ali Fraser pick up MVP honours with 44 big points, but The Women couldn’t match the Cup after a heartbreaking overtime second round exit to Glasgow University.

This year however, The Women are in the mix, having reached the Final Four with their win over GCU, Captain Nicole Davidson will be looking to lead her girls to victory this time around. The Women are joined in the Final Four by The Men, who most recently narrowly took down Edinburgh University after cruising past Dundee, 110-53.

Women’s Captain and Club President Davidson said,

I’m so pleased with the progress shown by both squads this season – to make the final four in the Conference Cup is a great achievement. I know that the women’s side have been working really hard this season to clinch some silver wear and the men the men have managed to continue their success against some tough competition, so I’m looking forward to see how both semi-finals play out.

This Wednesday will see both teams in action as the Club looks to have 2 teams in the SSS Cup Finals this year. The West Men will be up first at 2pm, taking on Heriot-Watt in the Lagoon and The Women will make the journey to St Andrews as they take on the league leaders from the Division above, in what will be a big task.

Club Head Coach Johnathan MacLeod commented,

We know it is a big task ahead of us, but, we must be confident in our abilities. At full strength, The Women – in my opinion – are a very hard team to beat. Both teams must work hard for 40 minutes this week, we know what is on the line. It’s bittersweet as we hope this is the last time the Men can compete for this title, as we move up to Division One, we will now compete for the BUCS Trophy.
